QIFF for Kids: 2018 Edition
The Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) offers lots of culinary favourites and some exciting surprises for the whole family. With over 170 food outlets ranging from five-star restaurants to food trucks, this year’s foodie extravaganza sees the return of popular festival activities such as live cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs. New this year is the "Coffee Zone"—a caffeine lover’s paradise celebrating Doha’s expanding artisanal coffee culture and the rustic "farm-to-table" experience of Qatar Foundation’s popular Torba Market.
Set in the beautiful Sheraton Hotel Park, QIFF 2018 has many pathways perfect for prams and buggies. There’s also an ample grassy hill with spectacular views of Doha, perfect for picnicking, relaxing with the family or rolling down the hill. Entrance to the festival is free, and food prices range from QR 5–40 with adult set menus from QR 49–99.
There are plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained including free nightly screenings of movie classics courtesy of Doha Film Institute, mini firework displays at 8pm, a fruit carving competition on 23rd March 4 at 6pm, and food contests.
So what’s on offer for the little ones? From an expanded children’s area to interactive, hands-on workshops and a mini zoo, this year’s QIFF2018 has got you and the kids covered!
QIFF is a food lover’s paradise with delectable delights from around the globe. Kids are well catered for with some stalls offering smaller portions. There are lots of classic sweet treats such as candy floss and ice cream to satisfy those sugar cravings including the famous Turkish ice cream man who serves up some ice cream entertainment to go along with the cold treat.
Be sure to check out Torba Market's temporary location at the festival. Here you’ll find culinary delights highlighting fresh ingredients and locally made products ranging in price from QR 15–40.
For kids who need a respite from the crowds, there is the playground in the northeast of the park which features large sandpits, slides, and climbing frames. A dancing fountain opposite Sheraton Hotel is a true crowd pleaser and great for little ones to splash in (don’t forget a towel and change of clothes!).
Crafty kids will enjoy the ceramic workshops offered by Café Ceramique where they’ll get a chance to create their own masterpiece to take home. Meanwhile, 7th Heaven Arts offers fun and interactive workshops, including face painting and drawing classes.
Watch and learn
Each year, QIFF gets bigger and better with lots of entertainment options such as yoga, sports demonstrations, music and dance.
The main festival stage hosts cultural and music shows from around the globe plus live children's characters performances. Starting each night at 8pm, kids will love the mini fireworks display followed by public outdoor screenings of Winnie The Pooh and Finding Nemo. There are live performances by Doha-based hip-hop dance troupe Beats and Bytes and The Doha String Quartet & Friends.
The mini zoo houses various furry farm friends in small pens that offer kids a chance to get close up to animals. Pony rides are QR 15.
Situated next to the Healthy Zone, there are activity booths for kids to participate in a variety of paid games such as Hook Ducks, Pull Your Prize, Knockdown and Bucket Ball. All priced at QR 20 per game.
Qatar’s National Programme for Conservation & Energy Efficiency, Tarsheed, offers free interactive activities for kids to learn about reducing water and electricity consumption.
If you want to indulge the kids with a special QIFF gift, you can purchase a variety of toys from designated stalls dotted throughout the festival. Keep an eye open for the vendors walking throughout the festival selling balloons with prices starting at QR 35 each.
