Creative Fun at the Fire Station

You can't miss the distinctive red fire engine parked outside the Fire Station on Mohammed Bin Thani Street. Previously a Civil Defense building, it is now an arts centre focusing on supporting and showcasing the work of local and visiting international artists. The station houses the Garage Gallery and provides studios for artists in residence. Also onsite are Café #999 and Cass Art, an art supply shop.

Family-friendly events

Managed by Qatar Museums, the Fire Station organises family tours and workshops, allowing younger visitors the chance to interact with visiting artists. Recently it hosted Motion Lab, where children aged two to seven were able to explore making art through movement and movement through art. Children tried spinning to make circles, stretching to make drawings or jumping to make patterns.

Workshops typically take place on Saturdays. Booking is required.

Bespoke tours and activities

The Fire Station also offers bespoke tours and workshops organised by Deena Hammam, head of the Public Art Education Team for Qatar Museums. Hammam coordinates events for various groups, including indoor and outdoor activities, and workshops for children with special needs. For example, workshops may include using clay or paints to make modern Arabic statutes inspired by public works of art in Doha, including those in the Fire Station courtyard. Contact Hammam directly at dhammam@qm.org.qa to organise a bespoke event.

Cass Art

One of the UK’s leading art retailers, Cass Art offers quality art materials and gifts, including a wide range of craft sets and Faber Castell children’s art materials, and Fire Station gifts.

Dining options

Café 999 is also worth a visit during a trip to the gallery. They have a range of food and drinks including freshly prepared hot meals, salads, cakes and a special children’s menu including chicken nuggets, beef burgers, cheesy pasta or fish fingers together with a milkshake, juice or hot chocolate (QR22–26). If you’re in a rush, Truck #999 is another option for a takeaway snack. Café 999 can also provide catering for events on site.
