4 Costume Ideas For the Not-So-Crafty Parent
The kids are back in school, or soon to be, and that means it’s time for early bedtimes, packing lunches, homework—and dress up days. Whether it’s for Halloween or school spirit days, fancy dress is inevitable, but costumes can be tricky to find in Qatar and not everyone carries the creative genes to make an elaborate costume from scratch.
For those of you who aren’t so crafty or just don’t have much time, we’ve rounded up some easy kids’ costume ideas that require minimal effort to put together. Most of the supplies you probably already have around the house or can be easily purchased at your nearest grocery store or hypermarket, but we’ve included a few tips on where to find any extra pieces.
from Hello, Wonderful
We love how simple and customisable this costume is—any colour or repetitive pattern such as stripes or polka dots would work. Feel free to get funky with the ribbons. A variety of textures and widths work well—sequins and sparkles are a bonus! You can even skip the eyes if you’re short on time. If you don’t have a hot glue gun, a stapler would also work to attach the ribbons.
- Umbrella hat or regular umbrella
- Hot glue gun
- Black and white construction paper (for the eyes)
Tip: Check Daiso or Dollar Plus for kid-sized umbrellas
2. Jelly Bean bag
from The Sway
Your sweetie is sure to match this sweet treat costume, and best of all, it’s so simple to make. Skip the logo if you don’t have a printer, or draw on a “Jelly Beans” label with markers if you’re feeling creative.
- Large, clear trash bag
- Balloons in various colours
- Jelly Belly logo printout
- Tape or glue for the logo
from And We Play
You can’t go wrong with a classic skeleton costume and with only four items needed to put this together, it’s a sure win if you’re scrambling the night before. White duct tape will stick the best, but in a pinch you could use masking tape if it’s not too humid outside.
- Black long-sleeved shirt
- Black pants/trousers
- White duct tape
Tip: Daiso or Jarir often carry white duct tape
4. Crazy Cat Lady
from Oh Happy Day!
Does your kid have a room full of soft pets? Then you probably have everything you need for this costume. We suggest using safety pins instead of sewing the cats (or any stuffed animal) to your child’s robe.
- Stuffed animal toys
- Safety pins
- Slippers (cat slippers are ideal)
- Gray wig (optional)
- Glasses (optional)
